News articles describe him as in poor health due to liver cirrhosis, and Sahrawi protesters have called on the state to fly him abroad to receive better medical treatment. Sario TV describes the protests as being organized by unemployed Sahrawis calling for jobs and an end to the exploitation of Sahrawi resources by the Moroccan state and European companies.
